Purpose The opinion of poor trabeculectomy outcomes in acute angle-closure glaucoma (AACG) patients was widely accepted. However, there has been no study comparing the surgical outcomes of initial trabeculectomy between acute and chronic angle-closure glaucoma (CACG). This study was to analyze the results of initial trabeculectomy in patients with primary angle-closure glaucoma.
Methods 51 patients with AACG and 106 patients with CACG were retrospectively included and follow-up for 18 months. The outcomes of trabeculectomy in eyes with AACG and those with CACG were assessed in terms of final intraocular pressure (IOP), changes to visual acuity, IOP fluctuation, the success rate(defined as an IOP of <21mm Hg with or without medication), and the incidence of complications.
Results 51 eyes of 51 patients in AACG group and 106 eyes of 106 patients in CACG group, were reviewed. Visual acuity was not significantly changed after surgery in both groups. Final IOP control and IOP fluctuations were not significantly different between patients in the AACG group than those in the CACG group. In terms of the success rate in 18 month, trabeculectomy outcome seemed to be comparable in these two groups which was 85.4% in the AACG group and 88.6% in the CACG group.
Conclusions In terms of final IOP control and IOP fluctuations, trabeculectomy may be another good choice for patients of AACG. |
