PURPOSE: To determine the expression levels of VEGF and PEDF in the aqueous humor of patients with PCV and AMD.METHODS: Aqueous humor were obtained from 11 patients with symptomatic PCV , 12 patients with CNV of AMD. VEGF and PEDF were determined by ELISA. As control, 10 samples of aqueous humor of patients who underwent cataract surgery were studied similarly. RESULTS: VEGF concentrations in aqueous humor were higher in the patients with symptomatic PCV and active CNV of AMD than the control's (P=0.001, P<0.001,respectively). PEDF concentrations in aqueous humor in these two groups of patients were likewise higher than the control's (P<0.000, P<0.000,respectively). VEGF and PEDF levels in PCV were significantly lower than those in CNV of AMD (P=0.039 and P=0.002 respectively).CONCLUSION: The patients with symptomatic PCV and neovascular AMD exhibit significantly higher VEGF and PEDF levels than those in control, but there are difference between symptomatic PCV and neovascular AMD group, indicate that VEGF and PEDF may also play a role in PCV, but different from that in neovascular AMD. |
