Purpose： To evaluate the results of topical ganciclovir for cytomegalovirus (CMV) endotheliitis.

Methods： Retrospective review of cases with CMV endotheliitis diagnosed by aqueous polymerase chain reaction treated with topical ganciclovir 2% in a single center.

Results： 40 eyes of 40 patients were positive for CMV DNA. All the patients were negative for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. The follow-up duration since the initiation of treatment was 10 to 23 months. The mean CMV DNA copies in aqueous before treatment were 2.16x10^6 copies/ml, and decreased to undetectable level.

Conclusions： Topical ganciclovir was effective in decreasing aqueous CMV viral load and slowing the endothelial cell loss rate and might be considered as an option for treatment of CMV endotheliitis.
