| AIM: To evaluate postoperative complications of different surgical techniques for cataract treatment in children.
METHODS 4t: We reviewed clinical records of 278 children (472 eyes) who underwent cataract surgery between January 2000 and December 2004. The median age of children at the time of cataract surgery was 39 months (range, 4-115 months). The median follow up was 26 months (range, 6-58 months). A posterior continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis with anterior vitrectomy was performed in all eyes, 47 eyes in infants <24 month were left aphakic and intraocular lens was implanted in 425 eyes. Optometry was given to all patients post-operative, and frame glasses were given when necessary.
RESULTS: The final best corrected visual acuity of the operated eye was 20/40 or better in 69.9% cases ,who can recognize the chart. Opacification of the visual axis was seen in 1case.Other postoperative complications included aphakic glaucoma (11.0 %), synechia formation (5％), pupil deformation (2.8％), and pupil capture (2.5％). Astigmatism of 1 week, 1 month ,3 month postoperatively was 4.2± 1.2 D、1.5±0.6 D及0 .6 3 ± 0 .16 D.
CONCLUSION: Cataract surgery with phaco and posterior capsulorhexis and anterior vitrectomy was advantageous for children over 4 mon. Intro-ocular lens are advisable for those older than 652 years. Optometry is important to gain a better post operative visual acuity ..
