Objects Epidemiologic studies provide evidence for a link between obesity or diabetes and the risk for diabetic retinopathy. However, there is a lack of information about the relationship between metabolic syndrome and diabetic retinopathy. Therefore, we investigated whether metabolic syndrome is a risk factor for diabetic retinopathy.
Methods We did a population based study for resident subjects who underwent system and eye checking as a screening exam at the Nanzhan Community Health Center of Shenyang, from August 2010 to September 2010. According to the International Diabetes Federation(IDF): metabolic syndrome definition, metabolic syndrome was diagnosed. We checked a total of 763 subjects who were put into the DR group (n = 28) and the DM group (n = 132) and non-DM group(n = 603).
Results The prevalence for metabolic syndrome was 32% in the DR group and 54% in the DM group and 25% in the non-DM group. On the multiple logistic regression analyses between DR group and DM group, metabolic syndrome was found to be associated with an increased risk of DR(odds ratio, 2.54; 95% confidence interval, 1.05-6.16). Also, waist circumference and FBG among the individual components of metabolic syndrome were independent risk factors for DR. But it was no significant difference between DR group and non-DM group.
Conclusion Metabolic syndrome was associated with DR in diabetes. Abdominal obesity and high-FBG of the individual components of metabolic syndrome were important risk factors for DR.
